Job Description

About Data for Progress

Data for Progress (DFP) is a leading progressive think tank and polling firm that equips movements with data-driven tools to deliver a more equitable future. We provide polling, data-driven messaging, and policy generation for the progressive movement, and we advise campaigns and candidates with the tools they need to win. Our core mission is to democratize access to timely, accurate, and effective public opinion research to facilitate social change. Since our founding in 2018, we have become a key partner to movement organizations and a trusted source for shaping policy and communication strategies at the federal, state, and local levels. Coming off a period of significant growth and impact, DFP is in a strong and thriving position with a proven track record of influencing policy and public discourse.

The Opportunity

Data for Progress is at a pivotal moment, and we are seeking a visionary and experienced leader to serve as our next Executive Director. This is an opportunity to lead a dynamic, mission-driven staff and build upon our success to steer the organization into its next phase of impact and growth. The new Executive Director will have the chance to set our strategic direction, expand our fundraising efforts, and serve as a prominent public voice for the organization, ensuring DFP plays a major role in progressive and Democratic landscapes leading into 2026, 2028, and beyond.

The ideal candidate will be a leader who is trusted by our progressive, unionized staff and is a strategic power player in D.C. circles. They will inherit a strong, collaborative team culture and will be tasked with building on DFP’s success and charting a clear, stable vision for the future.

As our Executive Director, you will:

  • Set and steward DFP's long-term strategic vision : Develop and execute a comprehensive organizational strategy that aligns with our mission and values, and positions DFP for significant impact in the years to come.
  • Lead DFP's fundraising strategy and maintain major donor relationships : Drive our fundraising efforts with enthusiasm, cultivate and maintain relationships with key funders and philanthropic networks, and secure the resources needed to expand our work. This includes having experience asking for and securing major gifts.
  • Manage the leadership team and support a collaborative staff culture : Oversee and manage a unionized workplace with a team of passionate staff, fostering a positive and empowering work environment. This includes experience managing teams and providing mentorship.
  • Serve as DFP's primary public spokesperson and network builder : Represent DFP in the media and at public events, building and maintaining relationships with key partners, stakeholders, and movement leaders. This requires a strong preference for a candidate based in Washington, D.C., to leverage networking and PR opportunities.
  • Drive research priorities and ensure alignment across departments : Set the overall research agenda in consultation with the leadership team, ensuring our polling and analyses are timely, relevant, and impactful.
  • Guide financial oversight, board engagement, and compliance : Oversee DFP's financial health, ensure compliance with all relevant nonprofit regulations, and lead operations staff while working closely with the board of directors.
  • Supervise and support staff hiring, evaluation, and team-building : Oversee all aspects of human resources, including hiring, performance management, and professional development.

We’re looking for someone with these skills and experiences (but you don’t need to have all of them):

  • Deep knowledge of public opinion research: A background in polling or data analysis is preferred but not a requirement . A strong understanding of how to communicate and leverage data for progressive causes is essential.
  • Demonstrated success in nonprofit, government, or campaign leadership: Proven experience leading a mission-driven organization, with a strong understanding of the progressive movement.
  • Experience in fundraising with philanthropic networks and major donors: A track record of successful fundraising, with established relationships in the philanthropic and donor communities.
  • Experience managing teams, especially early-career staff: A commitment to mentorship and fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Strong strategic planning and organizational leadership abilities: The ability to set a clear vision and execute a strategic plan that achieves measurable results.
  • Established relationships in the policy, congressional, and donor spaces: A strong network of contacts in Washington, D.C. and beyond.
  • Comfort with media and public speaking: A compelling communicator who can serve as our public spokesperson and represent the DFP brand.
  • Alignment with DFP's mission and vision: A deep commitment to progressive values and a passion for using data to create a more just and equitable world.
